The cause of panic attacks and panic disorder are not clear. There is evidence of both a genetic and a biochemical basis. There is also an association with alcohol, nicotine or drug abuse. Some medical problems and medications may cause panic attacks.
A panic attack is defined as the sudden onset of severe anxiety peaking within minutes and including some of the following symptoms such as:
- a pounding or racing heart,
- sweating,
- trembling,
- shortness of breath,
- choking sensation,
- chest pain,
- nausea,
- dizziness,
- feelings of unreality or being detached from oneself,
- fear of losing control or going crazy,
- fear of dying,
- numbness or tingling sensations,
- chills or hot flashes.
Panic attacks may begin after a serious illness, accident, or psychological trauma such as a death in the family. Most often, however, a panic attack comes "out of the blue."
If you are concerned because you are experiencing panic attacks with physical symptoms described above, consider contacting your primary care physician’s office or Dr. Westerback’s psychiatric office by calling (805) 497-1618 to make an appointment for an evaluation. |
